Building Support for Plum Island
The recent passage of my bipartisan Plum Island National Monument Act out of the House Natural Resources Committee represents a major milestone in the fight to protect and preserve Plum Island—one of Long Island’s most treasured ecological and cultural landmarks. This critical step brings us closer to securing the island’s future as a protected natural sanctuary. With this legislation now heading to the House floor for a full vote, we are making real progress in preserving this unique piece of Long Island’s natural heritage.
As a lifelong Long Islander, I deeply understand the value of Plum Island—not just as a landmark, but as an ecological haven and a symbol of our region’s identity. The island’s diverse habitats support over 200 bird species, including the endangered piping plover, while its surrounding waters are home to seals, sea turtles, and vibrant marine life. Protecting Plum Island isn’t just about today; it’s about ensuring that future generations can enjoy its unparalleled biodiversity and historical significance.
For years, Plum Island was at risk of commercial development due to the federal government’s plan to auction it off, threatening its rich natural and cultural resources. Former Representative Lee Zeldin successfully halted that sale, but we need permanent protections to safeguard the island from future threats. That’s why I introduced the Plum Island National Monument Act, which seeks to eliminate development risks once and for all.
This legislation, now approved by the House Natural Resources Committee, directs the Department of the Interior to conduct a comprehensive resource study—a critical step toward establishing permanent protections for the island. It’s more than a win for conservation; it’s a win for our community. Protecting Plum Island aligns with Long Island’s shared values of environmental stewardship and sustainable development. It offers opportunities for tourism, education, and scientific research, while preserving the unique character of our region.
I’m proud to champion this bipartisan legislation alongside colleagues who share my commitment to safeguarding Plum Island. Years of advocacy and collaboration have brought us to this pivotal moment, and while more work lies ahead, I remain optimistic about our progress.
This isn’t just about preserving a piece of land—it’s about protecting a legacy. Together, we can ensure Plum Island remains a sanctuary where nature thrives, history is celebrated, and future generations can marvel at its beauty.
