LaLota Co-Leads Bipartisan Legislation to Further Reduce Federal Taxes on Overtime for Firefighters, Police Officers, Union Workers
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Nick LaLota (NY-1) announced he introduced bipartisan legislation alongside Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) to expand a critical provision of the Working Families Tax Cut, eliminating federal taxes on overtime pay for all union workers. The bill was also introduced alongside Congresswoman Emilia Sykes (OH-13), Congressman Steven Horsford (NV-4), Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-1), and Congressman Tom Suozzi (NY-3).
“By expanding the no-tax-on-overtime provision to cover more hardworking Long Islanders, including firefighters, police officers, and tradesmen, we honor their long hours, heavy responsibilities, and the sacrifices they make for our communities,” said Rep. Nick LaLota. “The Working Families Tax Cut is already delivering historic wins for hardworking Suffolk County, and this next step ensures that even more men and women can keep more of what they’ve rightfully earned to bring home to their families.”
"No taxes on overtime pay simply means that American workers can keep more of their hard-earned wages and better support their families," said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien. "Expanding this policy to cover more Americans and more Teamsters — including those in the trucking, rail, and aviation industries — is common sense. We commend Representatives Malliotakis, Sykes, LaLota, Suozzi, Fitzpatrick, and Horsford for their bipartisan leadership, and call on Congress to pass this bill."
"As America's largest transportation labor federation, we are grateful to our congressional partners for introducing legislation to expand access to the overtime tax deduction benefit, which could mean thousands of dollars in tax savings for working Americans. Railroaders, aviation professionals, seafarers, emergency responders, and other union members put in long hours to keep our country moving and deserve to receive the full tax benefit of their overtime," said Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) President Greg Regan.
“Fire fighters across the nation continue to work grueling amounts of overtime and are denied time with their families. The No Tax on Overtime provision was an important first step in helping these men and women who work more than 53 hours per week. The No Tax on Overtime For All Workers Act is a critical next step to ensure that all fire fighters can qualify for this tax protection and keep more of their hard-earned pay. The IAFF applauds Reps. Malliotakis, Sykes, LaLota, Suozzi, Fitzpatrick, and Horsford for introducing this legislation and expanding on Congress’ efforts to support fire fighters and all other hard-working Americans,” said IAFF General President Edward Kelly.
“We applaud Representatives Malliotakis, Sykes, LaLota, Horsford, Fitzpatrick, and Suozzi for introducing the bipartisan No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act. Under this expansion, pilots who work additional hours beyond their scheduled hours or monthly limits set by their airlines will benefit from increased tax deductions on their overtime earnings. We urge swift passage of this pro-worker legislation,” said Captain Jason Ambrosi, Air Line Pilots Association, Intl.
“On behalf of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) and the thousands of skilled aviation professionals we represent, I want to thank Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis for her leadership on the No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act. This legislation will ensure that workers covered under the Railway Labor Act — including aircraft maintenance technicians —get a fair shake. By allowing these men and women to keep more of their hard-earned pay, this bill recognizes the sacrifices they make to keep our nation’s transportation system safe and reliable. Putting more money back into workers’ pockets is not only good for families, it strengthens the aviation workforce and helps protect good-paying union jobs here in America,” said Bret Oestreich AMFA National President
Background:
The No Tax on Overtime for All Workers Act expands the Working Families Tax Cut to exempt more union members’ overtime pay from federal taxation. This legislation would allow more firefighters, police officers, tradesmen, and other union workers to keep more of their hard-earned money.
Labor unions remain the backbone of America’s middle class, providing stability through reliable healthcare, retirement security, and opportunities for advancement. They also invest in training programs that strengthen the workforce and grow the economy. This legislation builds on that foundation by recognizing the value of overtime work and ensuring that those who keep our communities safe and strong are fairly rewarded.
