LaLota Votes to Uphold Title IX and Protect Women’s Sports

April 20, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, April 20th, 2023, Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01) released the following statement after voting YES on H.R. 734, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act(link is external).

“As the father of three young girls, all of whom play sports, and the husband of a former Division I women’s lacrosse player, I understand the important opportunities and protections given to them under Title IX,” said LaLota. “It is sad to see some people in this country want to erase the history and struggle that led to Title IX’s creation and landmark protections for women and girls. I am proud to vote in support of this commonsense legislation to protect the rights of not only my own daughters but young girls around the country.”

Background:

LaLota previously cosponsored H.R. 734(link is external) and spoke on the House floor(link is external) in favor of upholding Title IX and protecting the integrity of women’s sports.

The legislation allows women and girls a fair playing field in sports by ensuring school athletics comply with the Title IX recognition of a person's reproductive biology and genetics at birth. This bill ensures biological females compete against other biological females in women's sports that are operated, sponsored, or facilitated by a recipient of federal funding.
