LaLota Vows to Fight for Lower Taxes, Stronger Medicaid, and Protection of Vital Programs
Washington, D.C. — Congressman Nick LaLota (R-Suffolk County) issued the following statement after voting to pass the House Budget Resolution, a foundational measure that lays the groundwork for upcoming reconciliation negotiations.
"I voted YES on last night’s House Budget Resolution because it’s a critical step toward lowering taxes, cutting spending, and protecting vital programs like Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. While this resolution doesn’t directly make those changes, it paves the way for a future budget reconciliation vote that will bring real results,” said LaLota. “I’ll continue to support this effort if it raises the SALT cap, extends the AMT fix, keeps taxes low, and strengthens Medicaid by removing fraud, waste, and abuse. These are the priorities that matter to Suffolk County, and I’m committed to fighting for them."
Background:
The Budget Resolution is an important procedural measure that establishes a framework for upcoming fiscal negotiations. While the resolution itself does not change tax rates, cut spending, or carry any force of law, it sets the stage for the Budget Reconciliation process, which will occur in the coming months. During this process, key issues such as Medicaid and the SALT Deduction will be debated in detail.
With the national debt at $36 trillion and an annual deficit of $2 trillion, this Budget Resolution aims to promote a responsible approach to federal budgeting. It lays the groundwork for critical policy discussions and decisions, including potential reforms to Medicaid and the consideration of changes to the SALT deduction.
The Budget Resolution is a strategic step in the legislative process, enabling Congress to address pressing fiscal challenges while ensuring that priority issues, such as tax relief for families and Medicaid reforms, receive thorough debate and consideration.
Congressman LaLota has consistently demonstrated a commitment to fiscal responsibility and government accountability through his voting record on budget-related resolutions. He has supported measures to prevent government shutdowns and ensure continued federal operations..
In December 2024, LaLota voted to support bipartisan American Relief Act, which extended federal funding through March 14, 2025 and kept the government open while providing critical support for our troops, safeguarding Social Security, and ensuring millions of Americans have access to essential healthcare.
In February 2024, LaLota supported a continuing resolution to fund the government while Congress worked on passing all twelve appropriations bills, highlighting his opposition to government shutdowns and commitment to responsible governance.
In November 2023, LaLota voted in favor of H.R. 6363, the Further Continuing Appropriations Act, to avert a government shutdown and maintain funding for federal operations. He emphasized the importance of keeping the government open and ensuring that military personnel receive their pay.
In addition to his voting record, LaLota has introduced and co-sponsored legislation aimed at promoting fiscal responsibility.
In January 2025, LaLota introduced the Troops Before Politicians Act which proposes withholding pay from members of Congress during periods when military personnel are not receiving their pay, underscoring the prioritization of armed forces’ welfare over political disputes.
In November 2023, LaLota co-sponsored the Prevent Government Shutdowns Act, which requires members of Congress to remain in Washington, D.C., to work continuously until all spending bills are completed, thereby preventing government-wide shutdowns and ensuring the continuation of critical services.
