LaLota: Schools Are For Our Kids

June 22, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, June 22nd, 2023, Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01), the father of three young girls and the husband of a public school teacher, issued the following statement after voting YEA on H.Res. 461(link is external), a resolution condemning the use of elementary and secondary public school facilities as shelters for aliens who are not admitted to the United States:

“Prioritizing those who broke the law, who are manipulating our asylum laws and who have not been vetted for security issues, over young students, Veterans, homeless, individuals with disabilities, or any other law-abiding American citizen is simply unacceptable, ” said LaLota. “Every day the Biden Administration fails to act to secure the border, more Americans are hurt. This is unacceptable and it needs to stop.”

Background:

In May it was reported(link is external) that New York City, a self-imposed sanctuary city since 1989, had begun to convert public school gymnasiums into housing for migrants after the growing number of migrants overwhelmed the city’s homeless shelter system. A recent report(link is external) said that the City spends $8 million a day to house migrants just as the city begins to send asylum seekers(link is external) to other jurisdictions around the state.

Also in May, El Paso, Texas, began to use schools(link is external) and churches to temporarily house illegal migrants. The city’s overall migrant response(link is external) cost taxpayers $300,000 a day.
