Fighting for Long Island’s Future
This past weekend, I had a significant meeting with President Trump at Mar-A-Lago to address key issues that affect Long Island families, such as the need to restore the full state and local tax (SALT) deduction and combat congestion pricing. Our discussion was both productive and encouraging, and I am hopeful that it will lead to effective solutions that directly benefit Long Islanders.
The issue of the state and local tax (SALT) deduction cap is a paramount concern for our constituents. In the past, taxpayers could fully deduct their state and local taxes from their federal returns. Unfortunately, the current cap effectively subjects many in our community to a form of double taxation, imposing a penalty on taxes already paid at the state and local levels. This issue is especially severe in New York, where, under prolonged one-party Democratic control, we face the highest effective rates of property, income, and sales taxes in the nation.
Moreover, the burdens are compounded by Governor Hochul's policies, such as her congestion pricing plan, which unfairly targets commuters to fund mismanaged New York City initiatives. At a time when Long Island’s working families are already grappling with high transportation costs and lengthy commutes, these additional financial strains are untenable. The necessity for SALT relief has never been more pressing.
During our talks, President Trump reiterated his campaign commitment to increase the SALT cap, a move that would significantly alleviate the financial pressures faced by families across Long Island suffering under New York's steep tax regime. This issue transcends mere policy—it's about providing real economic relief to our hardworking constituents.
Amidst ongoing single-party Democratic control, New Yorkers have endured rising tax burdens. Nevertheless, after returning from Mar-A-Lago, I am more optimistic than ever about our ability to reduce living costs for our community. While challenges remain, I am steadfast in my resolve to advocate for tax reforms that will benefit all Long Island families.
The battle for fair taxation is ongoing, but I am committed to ensuring that our voices are heard in Washington. Long Island deserves a tax system that supports—not strains—its residents. I will tirelessly pursue this goal, standing up for policies that foster a more affordable and prosperous future for our community.
